Widgets (AJAX & Flash)

Widgets are the bread and butter of Web 2.0.

Generally, the term "widget" refers to an interactive component that is served up by the owner's website, and is embedded in a third party site.

Often powered by either Flash or AJAX, Widgets offer massive potential for leveraging partnerships.

Widget as a service

Often an online business will offer a widget as part of their service offering as a great value-add for their customers. e.g. iwannaticket.com.au is an online ticketing website where promoters can sell tickets for their events. As an added service, Extro Interactive built a widget which allows the promoter to add a ticket selection and purchasing widget to their own website without writing code. They can manage the widget from the iwannaticket promoter interface and the widget is automatically updated with latest events, pricing, and availability. Can you think of any way you could offer value to your customers by offering them a widget?

Widgets can add life to Display Advertising

Widgets can be used in place of traditional (read boring) banner advertisements. Rather than simple animated advertising messages, you can include price feeds, application forms, mini-sites, up-to-the-minute news updates, and just about anything else your imagination can cook up.

Embed Widgets on Partner Websites

Partnerships, sponsored websites, and cross-linking can be great sources of traffic and customers, but you can do better than standard banner ads or text links. A widget can allow prospective visitors to start interacting with your online service before they even reach your website. By the time they arrive, they could already be one click away from a purchasing or completed workflow, or you can take them to the most relevant section of your site based on their individual needs.
